Unofficial Shooter

A friend of mine from work was married this weekend in a beautiful ceremony at Canyon Springs Golf Course. Of course I brought my camera, but was careful not to get in the way of their professional photographer. I was able to capture some good shots during the ceremony outside, but as the evening wore on, I spent most of the night enjoying just being a guest at the reception. It's actually been several years since John and I have attended a wedding. I guess we're getting to the age where most of our friends have already gotten hitched! You can see photos from the wedding

Summer Fun

tunnel, originally uploaded by kymbny.

I happened upon a contest that 5 Minutes for Mom is having for photos demonstrating summer fun. The $500 prize has been donated by Skinny Cow. Most I've seen depict some type of water play, but I really liked this one of Zane so I'm entering it.

I just happened to buy some Skinny Cow ice cream sandwiches yesterday (part of my weekly shopping list) so I am happy to do a little pitching for them. Any company that makes it so I can eat ice cream and not feel guilty about it is alright by me!

Narcissism

It's interesting to me how few times in life when professional photos will be taken of us. During school there are the obligatory class photos which may or may not be considered professional (depending on your exact definition), there's prom and/or homecoming or some other such dance which, again, is school related, your wedding day and then, that's about it. That's not to say that there isn't the random snapshot of you on vacation, accomplishing something exciting, but, in general, that about marks the end of any expected photojournalism of one's life.

I used to think that taking photos of myself was narcissistic, that it indicated some flaw in my personality that I felt the need to see myself in photos. However, when I inventory how many photos I have in my possession that include me not looking goofy or mugging for the camera, I see that I am simply filling a void. It's a learning process for me as well, exploring aperture and ISO settings, without having to annoy someone else to pose for me. Zane is mostly a willing participant, but sometimes he is uncooperative so I'm a last resort.

Once, when visiting my great-grandmother, she sat transfixed on a large black and white photo of a young woman on the wall. "That's me," she sighed. I looked at it intently trying to imagine the woman sitting before me as that beautiful, young woman. I was much younger at that time then she was in the photo, but I remember being at once jealous of how lovely she had been and sad to see how age and Alzheimer's had changed her. "You're beautiful," I told her and I meant it.

I just hope one day I have a photo like that to keep me company in my old age.

Zane's Friends

We're lucky enough to have great neighbors. Right next door are a little boy and girl that are right around Zane's age. Last night we hung out in the front yard just as the sun was setting. I had to grab the camera and catch a few shots of all three of them playing. Their little girl is three months to the day younger than Zane and is just getting the hang of walking, although she was running around last night! She's got big brother to keep up with.

My little boy

It's hard to believe, but Zane is 16 months old already. This first year has flown by and I can't believe that he's already on his way to 2 years old! He's such a happy baby and a joy to be around.

Right now his favorite things are:

  • Being outdoors. He loves chasing our German Shorthair Pointer, Bach, around the yard and collecting sticks everywhere he goes.

  • Eating. He is an eating machine! I would say his favorite thing right now is avocados, he will eat half of one at a single sitting.

  • Being in the water. Whether it's in the pool or in the bathtub, he adores it!

  • Playing chase. He's at his most giggly when he's running away from someone hot on his heels - he loves it!

  • Monsters, Inc. I don't know if it's the monsters that he loves in this movie or Boo, the little girl character, but he just smiles the entire time the movie is on and it's adorable.
I can't wait to see what's in store for us next from this adorable little guy!

Lazy Sunday Evening

Since last October (maybe September!) we've been working on redoing our front porch. Whoever tiled it did a lousy job and it was nearly impossible to improve upon it without just taking the sledgehammer to it and destroying the entire thing.

John's idea was to cover the concrete slab with tongue and groove real wood flooring like many of the older houses in the historic district in our city. I love the look, but was skeptical that it would withstand the weather. We finally finished it awhile back and I love the look and feel of our front porch now. It's so inviting that I had to sit out there for awhile and flip through a magazine after Zane went to sleep. It's become one of my favorite places in/around the house!

little boys

Yesterday we spent some time at my mother in law's house with Zane's cousin, Reid. He turned six in January and was so sweet with Zane yesterday. I tried to get some photos of him, but as a typical six year old, he didn't stay still for long.

At one point, a neighbor boy came by and I overheard Reid telling him that he "needed to come over to see his baby cousin, Zane". Darling.

My first wedding shoot

Although I'm still waist deep in editing the 1000 photos I took, I survived my first wedding! In an effort to make the photos suitable for viewing, I've enlisted the services of Zenfolio. I'm impressed so far with their layout and the ease of use. If you are so inclined, feel free to browse through them - don't worry, I've narrowed it down to about 100 on the site.

Second published photo in Schmap

I was thrilled to hear from the Schmap people again who selected another of my pictures to be added to their website. This one is from Brackenridge Park on a fall afternoon when Zane and I went there for a walk. I'm also quite excited since this happens to be the place where we will be having his first birthday party, which is coming up soon.
